Morris County SHRM Legislative Hotline

Jackson Lewis LLP, a national labor and employment law firm with an office in Morristown, is pleased to offer a legal hotline service to Morris County SHRM members.

The hotline is designed to assist Chapter members in making day-to-day human resources decisions, while minimizing their exposure to employment law litigation and administrative agency proceedings. The hotline allows callers to receive answers to questions involving general employment law and personnel matters and obtain information about the design, implementation, legality and effectiveness of current and anticipated personnel policies and programs. The program aims to provide Chapter members with answers to relatively straightforward questions.

The hotline is not intended to serve as a substitute for ongoing legal advice and counsel. Rather, it is designed to provide callers with quick answers to basic questions. Inquiries that may require extensive research, review of personnel documentation or preparation of personnel policies or forms are beyond the scope of this proposed hotline service.

The following are examples of the most common questions resolved via this type of hotline:
An employee has complained about sexual harassment. How should I respond?

  • Must I allow an employee access to his or her personnel file?
  • How should I respond to a request for family and medical leave?
  • What types of personnel actions should be documented and why?
  • How should I record/document personnel actions?
  • What types of questions can I ask (and not ask) during an interview?
  • What issues should I consider in screening applicants for employment?
  • How can I respond to a request for an employment reference for a former employee?

The “hotline” telephone number is (973) 538-6890, which is also the main telephone number for Jackson Lewis’s Morristown office. Simply tell the receptionist that your call is a Morris County SHRM hotline call and ask for David Lichtenberg.

Summer Employment Law Update Workshop

On July 16, 2008, the Morris County and Central NJ SHRM Chapters partnered to present a Summer Employment Law Update workshop.  Attorneys from Jackson Lewis, LLP presented in-depth and practical information to over 100 attendees, covering topics such as family leave; electronic document management and security; “whistleblower” claims and workplace access to pornography.  Jackson Lewis has generously offered to share a copy of their presentation with us at click here.  We’d like to thank Jackson Lewis for sharing their time, expertise and humor, as well as the myriad of volunteers from chapters far and wide who came together to make this event a success!
