SHRM Foundation’s 2009 Accomplishments

Here are a few of the SHRM Foundation’s activities in 2009, made possible by your charitable donations:

  • In early 2009, the SHRM Foundation released an executive briefing on the Use and Management of Downsizing as a Corporate Strategy, summarizing research on common mistakes, costs, alternatives and best practices related to downsizing.

  • In a sign of the times, 2009 applications for SHRM Foundation scholarships increased by a remarkable 61% among SHRM professional members and 34% among student members. Together, both scholarship programs attracted more than 1,000 applications!

  • The SHRM Foundation funded more than $300,000 in academic research grants in 2009, bringing the total amount of active grant funding to $1.4 million.

  • In 2009, the SHRM Foundation released the eighth and ninth titles in the popular Effective Practice Guidelines series of reports. This series presents important research findings in a condensed, easy-to-use format for busy HR professionals.

  • The SHRM Foundation also released a new educational DVD, “Creating Future Global Leaders,” spotlighting the World Economic Forum in Geneva, Switzerland, and its approach to leadership.

  • These are just a few examples of the work done by the SHRM Foundation this past year, thanks to your generous support.  Thank you again for making an investment in the future of HR.

2010 SHRM Foundation Regional Scholarship Program

Don’t miss out on the 2010 SHRM Foundation Scholarship Program!

You may be eligible to apply for one of these coveted scholarships.

SHRM Foundation Scholarship application materials will be available online April 1, 2010.  Applications must be completed and submitted by July 15, 2010 in order to be considered for an award.  Please note all applications must be submitted online.

The SHRM Foundation will award a total of $100,000 annually in scholarships for SHRM members pursuing degrees in HR-related fields or SPHR, GPHR, PHR or California certification.  Members working in the media industry and pursuing a college degree are eligible to apply for a Barbara Sanchez Scholarship.

There are a few changes that are new this year. In recognition of rising college costs, the Academic scholarships have been increased from $1,375 to $2,000 each. In addition, there will now be 80 certification scholarships awarded, up from 60 in 2009.

Each region has a total of $20,000 to distribute which means applicants compete only with others in their own region. Each region will award 16 certification scholarships and 4 academic scholarships for a total of 20 awards.

Visit the website and click on “Scholarships & Awards” to learn more about the SHRM Foundation Scholarship Program and to see if you are eligible to apply.  These scholarships are generously underwritten by J.J. Keller Foundation, Inc.

For scholarship information or guidance on completing the application, please contact Shannon Eick, Foundation Chair, or Judy Treibman, Certification Chair.
